    Fudan reopens multi-functional student canteen

    By

Here with multiple pictures we introduce you to the new features of the north canteen 2.0.

The north canteen has been dear to numerous cohorts of Fudaners living at the Fudan’s Handan campus. Back in the days when the surrounding area was yet to gain reputation for the large shopping malls at the nearby Wujiaochang commercial center and leafy and comfy Daxue Road (named “University Avenue” on TripAdvisor), it was probably the favorite place to dine out among Fudan faculty and students for its affordable and diverse options.

Last July, the canteen was shut down for an all-round renovation. The canteen started from an unadorned dining hall providing only plain Chinese food, and over the years its facilities has been updated. A Variety of high-quality international and ethnic cuisines are offered. With a complete makeover, the venue has been turned into a brand-new multi-functional building, spanning a vast space of 12,576 sqaure meters.

    A dazzling variety of food

Food is of course the kernel of a canteen. There is plenty of delicacies in the new canteen for foodies to explore, ranging from popular Chinese regional cuisines to localized Western dishes and desserts.

    The stone bridge

Outside the canteen, luxuriant arrays of trees are reflected in the crystal-clear water flowing serenely beneath the traditional-style stone bridge. Water lilies will come into bloom in summer, adding a warm shade of pink to the landscape.

    Patio

Friends may enjoy a nice chat and couples a romantic dinner at the patio to the west side of the canteen, accompanied by pastel reflections from a glassy oblong pond.

To ensure safety of diners at peak hours, the roads leading to the entrances to the canteen have been widened, with separate lanes for pedestrians and bikes.

The exterior of the canteen building adopts a vintage industrial style, yet everything inside embodies human-centered design.

    Atrium

In the atrium of the canteen stand four trees representing the four campuses of Fudan University, (Handan, Jiangwan, Fenglin and Zhangjiang). The trees also echo a well-known Confucius saying that goes “It takes a decade to grow a tree and a century to cultivate a good person,” reminding Fudaners to never stop learning.

On a sunny day, light will dance into the delicate green of the leaves, with shades dotting the ground. When in rainy days, raindrops will tap on the skylight, melodious in tune.

    Perforated aluminum panels

The new atrium adopts an energy-efficient design. The walls are painted in soft pastels and installed with perforated aluminum panels, and an adjustable mirror is placed to refract light downwards, all for the canteen to take in sufficient sunlight.

    Smart waste collection equipment

Via a new smart waste collection system, food waste will be degraded by microorganisms into carbon dioxide and water, causing less pollution to the environment.
